Paranormal Investigations
Smithills Hall
Smithills Dean Road Bolton, BL1 7NP
Smithills Hall has a long and fascinating history. The oldest part of the current building, the medieval Great Hall, dates to the mid-1300s, but the site of the Hall is believed to have been occupied since around 800 AD. The Bower and Solar date to the 1400s, and the Hall also has both Tudor and Victorian wings. Smithills Hall is famously haunted by the martyr George Marsh, who was interrogated at the Hall in 1554 before being tried for heresy and burnt at the stake at Chester. The haunting was first described by a visitor to the Hall in the 1700s. Marsh famously stamped on a stone as he left the Hall, leaving his footprint behind as testament to his Protestant faith, and the footprint is reputed to bleed on the anniversary of Marshs death.
